I was always passionate about helping other people, but I wasn't always confident on the power of my voice and how to use it to help others. However, life has a way of thrusting you into your calling, in order for you to grow and fulfill what you are meant to do.
My personal experience dealing with the medical system while I was navigating my illness is the reason why I decided to become a Doula. Being a Doula requires that you advocate on behalf of women when they are at their most vulnerable, all the while, supporting them emotionally. My journey towards healing my body was exactly what I needed to remind me of my innate power to speak. For a very long time, I didn't do that. I didn't speak. I would allow external forces to dictate what I should think and believe. It wasn't until I went to a doctor's office that denied me treatment that I realized how much the medical system was plague by people who didn't value women who looked like me, that I came into the realization that there was a major problem that needed fixing.
