Luminary Member Tiffany Barrett

Tell us a bit about yourself! How did you get started with your current career path/business journey?

I come from a long line of birth workers and healers. I did not begin my career path to follow in those footsteps, but the path chose me and I stepped fully into the role 2 years ago. I am a champion for all things woman and fierce advocate for women’s wellness and reproductive justice. We built The Priceless Woman and Magic V Steam as safe spaces for all women, but especially women of color who suffer from glaring disparities in maternal mortality rates, breastfeeding rates and healthcare; especially in the area of reproductive wellness. I want women to fall in love with self care and reclaim their wellness. I could not sit on the sidelines and hope for someone else to give us better. I stepped into the arena to provide better.

What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to and why?

Compassion, I believe that being a woman is a collective consciousness. All my life, even as a young girl I was always trying to create safe places for girls and women, and never knew why. It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized it was because myself and many of the other girls/women around me did not feel safe. We couldn’t wear what we wanted to wear and walk down the street alone; we couldn’t tell our Moms if something weird was happening with our bodies for the fear she would think we were sexually active, there were not safe places for us to just be ourselves. Once you tap into that knowledge and you have the capacity to operate as a change maker for your community you no longer have to find your people you all begin to gravitate towards each other and create safer social communities. My companies are just my latest iteration of building those safe spaces.

What’s a mistake you made early on in your career, or in your business, and what did you learn from it?

I did not want to be the face of my brand at first. I wanted to stay in the background and be anonymous. I had so many fears, what if people didn’t like me, what if I hinder the diversity of our customers? Once I had my first meeting with a business coach/adviser, she encouraged me to become the face of my brand and share my story. People don’t connect to products, they connect to people and their stories, their journey. Once I did begin to put myself out there as the face of the brand we began to see growth in areas we had not previously seen. I’m still working on it because I come from a performance background in my previous career, I tend to go a bit overboard from time to time.

What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?

Correspondence, I am very bad at following up on correspondence which can be extremely detrimental to an entrepreneur. Fortunately I have a great support system that holds me accountable but I’m also working hard to put systems in place that will help me improve.

How do you invite others to a seat at your table?

This is such a good question! I am always open to collaborate with other service providers and brands that are aligned with core values and mission. There is a lot of room at our table because there is a lot of work to be done in the areas of birth work and healing.

What is one thing that you wish you learned a year ago?

PR is NOT a luxury, it is a necessity.

What impact has Luminary made in your career? eg: Community, Business Generated, Revenue, New Clients, Career Connections, Advancement Opportunities

I’m a brand new 2022 Luminary Fellow and already the sense of community here is overwhelmingly amazing. From the onset of the kickoff zoom we were chatting, connecting, sharing, following each other on social media and even getting referrals. I’m so excited for what this year will bring. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to take advantage of all of the resources available to us and also the opportunity to network with other like minded women and hopefully collaborate with some of them in the future.
